Residency Purpose Statement

The Swedish Medical Center PGYI Residency Program will enable new graduates to develop into competent practitioners in a variety of clinical settings. Rotation experiences in internal medicine, ambulatory care, critical care, and academia will provide pharmacists completing the program the knowledge and tools to begin their career in an advanced clinical or faculty setting or continue their postgraduate training in a PGY2 program.

Residency Experience

The residency year is composed of ten core learning experience rotations and two elective rotations. Elective rotations may be selected from a list of available experiences or the resident can choose to repeat any core rotation. Core and elective rotations last for one calendar month with longitudinal rotations requiring progress throughout the residency year.

Longitudinal Rotations

The service component (staffing) is considered a longitudinal rotation during the PGY1 year. Staffing provides the resident with the opportunity to identify the unique challenges present while working as an independent practitioner and apply knowledge gained during learning experiences. The required service component is every third weekend (two, ten-hour shifts), plus participation in the holiday rotation (one summer and one winter holiday).
Residents are paid a $40,000 stipend for the 52-week residency year. Twenty days of paid time off (PTO) are included; this time is expected to be used for holidays, job interviews, travel to meetings (other than ASHP Midyear and the Western States Residency Conference), and/or illness. Medical and dental insurance is an optional benefit that the resident may elect. All residents must complete a physical and health screening examination prior to starting the residency program.
The resident will attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting (MCM) to present a poster for their residency project and assist with recruiting during the Residency Showcase. The resident will also attend either the Western States Conference in California or Mountain States Conference in Utah to present the findings of their residency project. Registration and travel fees will be covered by the residency program; however, society memberships such as ASHP are the responsibility of the resident.

Pharmacist Licensure

Licensure in the state of Colorado is a requirement of the SMC PGY1 residency program. The licensure process can take 6-8 weeks and residents should strive to obtain licensure prior to the June 20th start date. It is recommended to retain photocopies of all materials submitted for licensure. More information on obtaining pharmacist licensure in Colorado can be found at
